My Approach to Documenting Practicum 1

Hi there! Welcome to my portfolio! Thank you for taking the time to read this. On this website, I will track my learning in many different ways! I mainly like to reflect on scenarios and experiences with connections to class readings and especially the Bc Early Learning Framework work, so be prepared for a lot of quotes, references and other similar connections in my writing. this idea of blog post and connections to readings and research to me also fits in well with our ECEBC code of ethics “principle 7: We maintain the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness needed to be professionally competent.” Early Childhood Educators of BC. (2021) by “incorporating ongoing learning from current research and professional research into practice, considering multiple perspectives and ways of knowing.” Early Childhood Educators of BC. (2021) I feel that by adding readings, I am considering multiple perspectives and therefore maintaining the knowledge, skills and self-awareness I require to be professionally competent.

I have decided to share my evidence of learning and my pedagogical documentation together in a style almost similar to a blog post, i will go over my day and what we did, i will go over what i learned and my experiences, i will share photos and i will connect to class readings and the bc early learning frame work. This will also be where I mention any feedback. These will be posts on the longer side, probably, but I will use headings to organize my thoughts and ideas so it’s easy to go through.

i have also decided to share the photos from my conversation boards from class and my shares, these wont be very long shares and the will mostly be my connections to certain scenario’s but i believe this is a great thing to share as it keeps our pedagogical conversations moving.

My Approach to Documenting Practicum 2

This Practicum is going im going to be very specific in what I choose to write about and think about with my documentation. I’m going to document many things via notes, pictures and voice recordings and use these observations to narrow down ideas and think and try to connect these thoughts and ideas to my pedagogical commitments. I will be trying to style my documentation style still in blog posts, but this time, instead of it being everything I did in a day, it’s going to be on a topic/idea over a long time. I hope to style this almost like the pedagogical narrations on the ECPN website.

My Pedagogical Commitments

My pedagogical commitments have formed due to many different factors. I want to avoid the negative subject making that is caused by a heavy focus on child development. This aims to only create a subject who is deemed “properly developed.” This fits in with only a traditional Western white male description. In conversations with classmates, it was pointed out to me that subject making is unavoidable in the world of education, and I totally agree with this point. This is why, with my commitment, I hope to have a classroom community that inspires subjects to form in ways that connect them to who they actually are, . I’m committed to seeing, respecting, and learning using the gifts and knowledge children carry with them already from their families, hobbies, and day-to-day experiences. This quote from Gaile Sloan Cannella’s book Deconstructing Early Childhood Education reminds me of my commitment: “We have, in fact, assumed that the language of child development represents Truth and benefits all children, from whatever culture, socioeconomic background, or historical period.” (pg. 46, Cannella, 1997). This quote reminds me never to fall into expecting things to look or be a specific way, or a child to act a specific way. It also reminds me to pay attention to cultures, backgrounds, and so much more, over paying attention to what child development would traditionally expect when it comes to everything and anything in the classroom.
